I Went to Syngenta Today

Randy P. works for Syngenta and today was one of their events for United Way. He asked me several weeks ago if I could come and help him talk to people about ARFP. ARFP, Golden Retriever Rescue, and Feral Cat Assistance Program were all represented by Syngenta employees. It was a fundraising event for their United Way campaign. It was fun and Randy had done lots of work to prepare for this day. He put together an awesome slide presentation of animals adopted from all three organizations. Of course, all of his ex-fosters were in it, and it was fun to watch. There were vendors there selling different things with a portion of the proceeds going to United Way. One of the fun things was a "Duck for a Buck" raffle. You pay a buck and pick up a rubber duck to see if you win a prize. We won t-shirts, lunch and an IPOD Nano! YEAH!!! Here is our section of the table....

Thanks so much Randy for inviting me to Syngenta and thank you for always making ARFP proud!

World Rabies Day

The pictures tell most of the story....

What is missing are pictures of the feral cat shredding Pam S. The owner said her cat would jump out of the cat box when we opened it so Pam got into my Jeep with an Animal Control Officer to open the box and vaccinate the cat for Rabies. The cat turned out to be feral - it was not a pretty picture. Pam ended up at a Prime Care getting her wounds doctored.

The AC Officer? He escaped with not even a scratch - hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

On the up side...THANK YOU, THANK YOU to every single person that posted flyers, e-mailed flyers and helped on Saturday! You guys are awesome!

Busy Couple of Days

Last night was Wednesday Night Live in Jamestown. Thanks Pam S, Judie U and Sue Y for your attendance and for bringing Metoo, Dee Dee & Dexter! Tonite was the Harrison's Deli fundraiser! Thank you everyone for your support! Our very youngest supporter was 6 month old Grady! It was slow but a good night for chatting - not sure if it was the weather, price of gas, or the economy in general that kept many people from coming out.

Meet Tucker!

Tucker is a 20# Schnauzer/Poodle mix—age unknown, perhaps 5 years of age. He was living in a local shelter waiting to be adopted or euthanized, whichever came first. Now he is in ARFP. Little does he know he has hit the jackpot! He is a strong heartworm positive, has a grade 3-4 heart murmur , is slightly anemic (not enough to create the grade heart murmur he has), and has one elevated liver value. Additionally he has skin and allergy issues and is not neutered. Before we can start the heartworm treatment, he will have to have a couple of weeks of antibiotics, prednisone, and Lipovet (supports the liver). Tucker is a wonderful and happy little dog. Dr. Sue Thomas of Summerfield Veterinary Hospital said he was a wonderful patient and allowed them do anything to him—he had blood-work and x-rays in addition to the physical exam.

Please keep Tucker in your thoughts over the next several months. He has a long way to go before we can look for his forever home.

Pitiful Pup

The After Hours Veterinary Emergency called me and they had a puppy dumped at their place on Saturday. Patricia W. had given me a heads up that they were going to contact me and they did. I went to see the puppy today at 2pm. I haven't seen a puppy looking this bad in ages. The poor little guy was emaciated, anemic and severely malnourished. They had dewormed him and managed to get all of the fleas off of him. They needed him moved fast because they are not supposed to keep strays at their clinic. There was a chance he would be sent to the local animal shelter tonite if we could not take him. Well, what was I supposed to do? I couldn't leave him there. Here was this little bag of bones under my feet looking at me, pleading his case. Patricia W. said she would be able to keep him until I could get him into a foster home so I took him back to the adoption center with me.

I sent out an e-mail asking for a foster home and lots of people came forward saying they could take him temporarily. Then I got this touching e-mail from ARFP foster parent Linda D. She wanted to foster him so badly. I could tell she would be heartbroken if I said no. I called her and she is so thrilled. She will get him tomorrow evening around 6:30.

Thank you to everyone that networked for him and offered help! Keep sending good thoughts his way!

Langley loves her toys!

Langley came to ARFP after being rescued off a Burlington highway seconds before being hit by a car. Her siblings have been adopted. She is such a good girl and would fit into most any home.

A few things coming up next week that you need to be aware of are....

Who is ARFP?

The Animal Rescue & Foster Program, or ARFP, is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping abandoned animals. We were founded in 1993 and have the most amazing, dedicated, awesome volunteers! We are an in-home foster care program. This means that 99.5% of the animals in ARFP live in foster homes. The other .5% live at the Next Step Adoption Center. Opened in 2003, for our ten year anniversary, the Next Step Adoption Center has been an amazing venue for ARFP to show animals to the public. We are open three days a week to the public for adoptions. Foster parents bring their animals on those days in hopes of them being adopted. ARFP is a No-Kill organization, so the animals taken in do not have a deadline. They are with us until the right home comes along.

Where does our funding come from? Individual donations and fundraisers. We are not State or County funded.

Why a blog? Blogs are so big right now. They keep people informed and up to date on happenings. They also help people to see you for who you are. If only one adoption somewhere comes from someone reading this blog then it will all be worth it.

I'm Sharon Gray and my goal is to post as often as possible and keep you up to date on ARFP happenings and what babies we have up for adoption.
