It came quickly and went quickly and it was the most fun of any Purse Sale we have ever had! We had over 3000 purses this year and they flew off the tables. We always have such a busy February that it is flying by. Besides the calls on abandoned puppies and kittens we have one of our favorite fundraisers this month. Our purse sale is Saturday, February 19th. However, we must have a Purse Drive prior to the Purse Sale, so that we make sure we don't have any less than about 3000 purses! Woot!

Our Purse Drive is this Saturday, February 12th, and Sunday, February 13th, both days from 12-5pm at the Next Step Adoption Center located at 705 Milner Drive in Greensboro! It's been posted in the local News & Record, YES Weekly, Facebook, etc...so we expect a good crop of purse donations. Volunteers will be ready to accept purse donations and give receipts for your tax-deductible donation!

The 2011 Purse Sale is Saturday, February 19th, from 8am-1pm and is going to be our biggest one yet!

Want to donate? Purses can be dropped off, or shipped, to 705 Milner Drive in Greensboro, NC, 27410. If no one is there, someone will be soon, so just leave your bags on the front porch in the bins supplied. Volunteers are in and out every few hours!

In the last two weeks we have taken many puppies and kittens into ARFP foster homes! It's been a zoo. We have spayed or neutered 21 puppies and kittens in the last two weeks. We have events and more events planned all the way up until Christmas! Somewhere in between we have to fit Thanksgiving in!

The economy is hurting everyone and with the holidays approaching we are afraid it will be worse. The number of calls we receive about animals needing help is at an all time high! We feel blessed that we can help all of the animals that we are able to. We have you to thank for that! Our supporters make this possible.

I'll post pictures tomorrow of some of the little ones we have been able to help this Fall due to your support! In our book, you rock!

Meet Ziva! This little girl continues to get looked over, and over, and over. We know her home is out there so where are you??? Ziva came to ARFP a little over a year ago via Summerfield Veterinary Hospital. She has a great personality and a zest for life! She would be a great dog for a younger, active person, or a family that enjoys the outdoors, long walks, going to the park, etc....

Ziva is athletic, charming, and playful. She has the ability to live life to its fullest when you want her to and then snuggle down on the couch next to her person to watch TV. She is going to make someone a great companion! You just need to meet her!

Ziva has friends of the feline species and of the canine species. She is a team player and seldom descriminates. Weighing in at 65 lbs. Ziva is crate trained and house trained. She is not quite two years old.

We do know that there is someone out there looking for her! Someone that NEEDS her as much as she NEEDS them! So, where are you? This wonderful little girl is waiting patiently until you come to get her....

Meet Ollie! Ollie came to ARFP via the local After Hours Veterinary Emergency Clinic where he was abandoned. Here is the story. He lived in Atlanta Georgia - yea, he's a peach - until his owner was arrested. At that point a friend of the owner brought Ollie to Greensboro, NC. She could not keep him so she dropped him inside the front door of the emergency clinic and....RAN!!! Fortunately one of the veteranary technicians caught up with her and got Ollie's low down!

Ollie is declawed on all four feet, neutered, and up to date on all his shots! Oliie is between 8 and 10 months of age. He is a sweetheart and he is ready for adoption!

This summer was hot and brutal, then it was gone, just like that, overnight. We are not complaining though. Hopefully with it went the diseases, the Parvo, and the parasites! We dealt with 16 cases of Parvovirus this year. Unfortunately the strain this year was very deadly and we lost 7 puppies we were helping. It was stressful and horrific but there are so many more that need our help.

Every single day we receive numerous e-mails and phone calls about puppies and kittens.

August 21st was International Homeless Animals Day and, one again, Aveda invited ARFP to come to their Hanes Mall location to raise money to help homeless animals!

We had a fun day with Holly, Reese, Ally and Tess. Many thanks to Cory, Karen, Caitlin, and Jenny for helping at the event all afternoon. Thanks also to Tess and Allys foster parents, Cindy & David, for dropping them off so that they could be part of the celebration!

The day was a success and money was raised to help more homeless animals in need.

Amber...Full Circle

This was Amber last summer. We rescued her from a shelter in Lee County. She came to us with nine puppies and she was practically emaciated. Five days later she broke with Parvo. Amber almost did not live to see this day.

Once Amber's puppies were weaned and distributed to different foster homes Amber, too, was sent to a new foster home, one that would love her, and give her the attention she so desperately needed. She developed into a beautiful dog that we labeled a Collie mix. Her true colors came out once Amber was in a home without her puppies. She liked people but was not sure whom to trust. Children made her nervous. She loved the company of other dogs. She grew to trust all of the ARFP volunteers that she would see each week at adoption events.

She just could not find that one person, outside of her foster dad, whom she could trust 100%. Last Monday she met Vicky. Vicky was looking for a companion dog that needed help. One that needed someone special to love them. She met Amber and it was touch and go at first but Vicky could see that Amber needed someone like her and that she needed a dog like Amber.

Amber has been with Vicky since Saturday and things could not be going more perfect. Amber is walking on a leash with her tail held up proudly, she is not using her crate, and she is looking at Vicky as her person.

Fingers and toes are crossed with the hope that this is Ambers forever home!

Daylight savings time always means that Spring is right around the corner. Spring means the flood gates open and our phone lines are full of calls about orphaned puppies and kittens. So sad that such a beautiful season brings gloom and doom in the rescue world. We wonder, each year, how we will make it through another Spring time, financially and physically. The 5k Human Race is how we make it through!

This race is sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Greensboro and is a venue for all nonprofits to raise much needed funding. This will be ARFP's 16th year walking. These funds determine how many animals we can help each Spring.

It seems we are in for 6 more weeks of winter weather according to Mr. Groundhog and our dog and cat food supply is gone. You may remember that several postings back I mentioned helping a man with 20 dogs. He is only one of many people in the community that we help. Dry dog food and dry cat food donations are always needed. So many people in the community have lost their jobs, their homes, and their incomes. These people want to keep their pets and need this little bit of help to do so. Donations of dog and cat food can keep one more animal from becoming homeless.

2009 flew by so quickly. We're always sad when a year passes and some of our cats, or dogs, are still not adopted. Lucy Lu and Calla have been with ARFP for over a year. They both came to us as mama cats with babies. Calla was literally dumped on our front door step with 7 kittens, 5 of her own and 2 older ones. Lucy Lu was found in the woods and brought to ARFP.

2010 has given both of these wonderful cats a loving home. On Saturday they will be going to a home, together, where they can be cats and do as they please. They will be strictly indoor girls living with a woman that first adopted from ARFP over 14 years ago. It thrills us when people come back to us to adopt their next family members, for a second time. We must be doing something right...

We will miss you sweet girls....

Meet Bingo! He is a 10-12 month old Terrier mix. He is full grown at 25 lbs. and is full of life! Bingo never meets anyone or anything that he doesn't love. Just like so many of the stray dogs ARFP takes in, Bingo is just grateful and happy to be in a safe home with lots of love. We are desperately trying to help an elderly man in High Point who has had too many dogs abandoned on his property. 20 to be exact. He lives on a corner lot in a very questionable area of town and his entire property is fenced in so it is very easy for people to drop dogs into his yard, which they have done. He is out of work. So, I called him on Thursday last week to tell him I had two of his female dogs scheduled to be spayed this week and he needed to have them ready for pick up early, blah, blah, blah... I aksed how the last two female dogs that we spayed were doing and he said good and that he was cooking for them. I said cooking? He said yes, he would not get anymore money until October 1st so he had bought a big bag of dried beans and cooked for the dogs twice a day so they could eat.

This broke my heart...

I immediately went to see what, if any, donated food we had. I was able to scrounge up 6 bags of food so I called the nice man who is being the "taxi" for all of the spay trip from High Point to Greensboro and he met me to get the food!

I say all of this just to let you know that food donated to ARFP NEVER goes to waste! Our foster homes are so grateful when we get donated food, as are the people in the community that we try to help.

Sherbert Time!

Sherbert went back to NC State Tuesday for some more testing. His doctors have been able to rule a lot of things out but still have no definitive diagnosis.

He went through Neuro and was rechecked and they deemed him to be doing the same. They then anesthetized him and did an Electromyogram.

An electromyogram (EMG) is a test that is used to record the electrical activity of muscles. When muscles are active, they produce an electrical current. This current is usually proportional to the level of the muscle activity. An EMG is also referred to as a myogram.
EMGs can be used to detect abnormal electrical activity of muscle that can occur in many diseases and conditions, including muscular dystrophy, inflammation of muscles, pinched nerves, peripheral nerve damage (damage to nerves in the arms and legs), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis, disc herniation, and others.

An EMG is often performed when patients have unexplained muscle weakness. The EMG helps to distinguish between muscle conditions in which the problem begins in the muscle and muscle weakness due to nerve disorders. The EMG can also be used to detect true weakness, as opposed to weakness from reduced use because of pain or lack of motivation. EMGs can also be used to isolate the level of nerve irritation or injury.

We, the neurosurgeon and I, had already discussed if they would take biopsies of the nerves and the muscle. Taking a biopsy of the nerves can often cause permanent damage and leave the animal worse off than before the biopsy. Taking muscle biopsies causes little to no problems. I chose not to have nerve biopsies done and they seemed to be on the same page. Muscle biopsies were done once they got in there b/c his muscles did look a little odd. Those biopsy results should be back later this week.

Sherbert spent Tuesday night, after the procedure and surgery, at State and I was able to pick him up late Wednesday. This little jaunt cost $709.08 :-( bringing Sherbert's bill to $3710.00.

Where are we now? We just know what he does not have, which is a very long list of things. I may, or may not, know more when his doctor calls me. For now, Sherbert is enjoying bathing in the sun at the adoption center and is accepting visitors! We have raised a little over $2200 towards his tests and treatment. YAY!!! Thank you for your prayers, donations, and support!

Sherbert Update

Poor little guy has shaven spots all over him!

Sherbert spent last Wednesday through Friday at the vet. school and is under the care of two excellent doctors (a senior neurologist and an internal medicine doctor) and one very compassionate veterinary student. They all love Sherbie and are giving him lots of love while they have him.

Wednesday the neuro department gave him a full exam, chemistry panel, and other miscellaneous tests including a heartworm test. He was also tested for Toxoplasmosis. His blood work was pretty much normal except that he showed a little anemia which surprised me. They then x-rayed his spine and lumbar region. No abnormalities. At that point they had their head ortho doctor look at him. Nothing was found.

On Thursday Sherbert had an MRI and a cerebrospinal tap. Again, no abnormalities. Rachel, the student, and Dr. Lennon, the internal med. doctor, were extremely good about calling me after each anesthesia and at the beginning and end of each day.

Sherbert was able to come home Friday afternoon, along with his bill of $2513.63. We were extremely fortunate to get $1000 donated towards Sherbert's bill by an anonymous donor to the vet. school! I have collected about another $800 from individual donors! Thank you so much for your donations and words of encouragement! More donations are still needed!

This morning Sherbert went back to State for further diagnostics. They performed nerve conduction tests on him while he was under anesthesia. Barring no problems, we'll go back to get him tomorrow and have a consult with the doctors.

Send good thoughts and prayers his way. The testing today was the roughest for him yet. Thanks to all of you!

Sherbert Update from 8-14-09

Thank you for all your inquiries about Sherbert! Many thanks to everyone that has made a donation to Sherbert's rising medical bill. Donations are still welcomed as his bill is not nearly covered.

Sherbert is still in Raleigh. Today he had an MRI and a spinal tap. At 5:30 this evening they were still waiting for the senior neurologist to look over his results.

Sherbert will be able to come home tomorrow afternoon but he must return to the Veterinary School next week for some electrode testing.

Sherbert's primary doctor said he did very well with the anesthesia and testing today. You can visit Sherbert Saturday from 11am-3 and Sunday from 1-4pm at the Next Step Adoption Center. We are asking that he is handled as little as possible as he will be very sore for a few days. But...petting and belly rubs are encouraged.

Sherbert Needs Your Help

Sherbert's Story

Sherbert is almost 2 years old. He was rescued last year when his owners moved from an apartment complex leaving him behind. If you have met him you know how special he is. He is the type of cat that makes a lasting impression. He is "the" typical sweet male orange tabby! He plays with the baby kittens at the Next Step Adoption Center and will roll around with the most energetic of puppies. He definitely has "special' written all over him.

In the late Fall of 2008 Sherbert developed some neurological problems that have kept him from being adopted. Dr. Mark Brigham, at Greensboro Veterinary Hospital, has been baffled by Sherbert. He has probed, x-rayed, and treated Sherbert as much as he feels his education taught him to.

Sherbert has been referred to the NC State School of Veterinary Medicine. He is now there for testing, more x-rays, and an MRI and a spinal tap. We hope to get a diagnosis for Sherbert so that he can one day be a healthy kitty but this comes with a high price tag. Approximately $3200. As I write this Sherbert is undergoing testing at State.

I am sending out this appeal to ask for donations to help pay for Sherbert's medical care. Every donation, no matter how small, helps.

Fergie came from a couple in High Point Jamestown area. They found her wandering, lost and scared, 2 months ago. Such an animated, cute girl she is.

First of all I want to update everyone on Amber and her puppies. Amber is doing wonderful! She has now been spayed and she tested negative for heartworms. We were all praying for that so that she would not be put through any more needles being poked at her.

It's been very hard for me to want to update the blog because we ended up losing three of Amber's puppies to what the veterinarian thought may be a heart defect. In all instances the puppies went downhill in less than 24 hours and died. It was heartbreaking, as you can imagine, for many of our volunteers.

So far this summer we are seeing more abandoned kittens and puppies than ever before. We are also receiving more calls on small dogs than we have in the past. The Next Step Adoption Center will be open the rest of the summer on Saturdays from 11am-3, Sundays from 1-4pm and on Wednesdays from 5-8pm.

Lulu is a Puggle who was born in April of 2007 so she just celebrated her 2nd birthday...homeless. Lulu is a happy girl that is looking for a nice family to adopt her, care for her and love her. She weighs less than 20 lbs. and is a delight to be around. She never wants to have to live in a shelter again. Lulu is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained, and spayed.

This little boy is nameless so far but he is being well cared for in an ARFP foster home.

These three babies were born on a bale of straw at a garden center.

Pomeranian + Benji dog = this cute little boy!

Jack is Chrissy's brother. Janet already got adopted! He, too, is living at the Next Step Adoption Center.

Mommy was a Pomeranian, daddy was a Benji dog. This is the little girl.

Chrissy is a sweet Torti that is living at the Next Step Adoption Center. She was born in early April and is a sweetheart.

This is Jack, a five year old Schnauzer rescued from a puppy mill. He has been used as a breeder dog all of his life.

Amber Plus 8

The puppies continue to grow. Amber continues on her path to healing. Please keep your fingers crossed that this girl is negative for heartworms. She has been through enough in her short life already. She will be tested when she is spayed which will be at least another 3-4 weeks. Right now Pam is trying to get her to gain more weight so that we can deworm her. She was in the middle of being treated for whip worms when she broke with Parvo.

The puppies are big enough now for their first dewormings. By the weekend they will receive their first Parvo vaccination. Normally you do not give a straight Parvo vaccine, nor do you vaccinate at 4 weeks of age. Their veterinarian recommended this as a precaution since they have all been exposed to Parvo. They also did not receive the normal antibodies that other puppies would have gotten from their mother since Amber was so sick.

ALL 8 Puppies Are Weaned...

...Even the Runts! I think we should call our litter "Amber Plus 8"! Just wanted to update you that all 8 puppies are now eating. They are slowly realizing that the next bottle is not coming so they need to eat. They are growing like weeds, their motor skills improve daily, and their appetites are ravenous!

Pictures of the other 6 puppies and Amber will be posted later. Amber still appears emaciated but she really has gained weight and is improving each day. Her "True Colors" are starting to show through. She is showing signs of being a young dog herself now that she is feeling better. She has been completely separated from the pups now so that her recuperation will speed up and she can continue to heal.

Thank you very much Pam S. and Meghan F. for bathing Amber. I know she feels much better being clean and rid of the Parvo smell. Thanks to everyone!

THE Dreaded PARVO

The week of May 18th ARFP received an e-mail from a rescue person soliciting for someone to rescue this mother dog, with 9 puppies, from a shelter in Lee County. She was headed for euthanasia if she was not pulled from the shelter ASAP. These were the pictures that were sent out to rescue groups.

The puppies were just days old and ARFP had room to take them. They needed our help!

Within five days of intake, the mother dog, now known as Amber, broke with Parvo.
Canine parvovirus is a contagious virus mainly affecting dogs. The disease is highly infectious and is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces. It can be especially severe in puppies that are not protected by maternal antibodies or vaccination. It has two distinct presentations, a cardiac and intestinal form. The common signs of the intestinal form are severe vomiting and severe hemorrhagic (bloody) diarrhea.

This is what our Amber was diagnosed with by our local veterinarian.

Armed with fluids, injections, puppy formula, needles, IV lines, baby bottles, nutrical, yogurt, hand sanitizer, clorox solution, and dedicated volunteers Amber had an entire troop trying to pull her and her puppies through this disease.

It was quickly apparent that Amber could not care for her 9 puppies. She was so sick she couldn't raise her head and had no interest in anyone or anything. We were not only looking at losing Amber but possibly all 9 puppies. After diagnosis Amber immediately started receiving fluids and injections.

We are truly lucky to have a veterinarian that knows what our skill sets are and one that is willing to let us treat our sick animals with her guidance. Pulling a mother dog and 9 puppies through parvo can run thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately we lost the smallest puppy very quickly. We then identified the other two smallest puppies and started them on, not only formula, but fluids.

With Amber fading away quickly the bottle feedings began....

After almost a week of treatment, bottlefeedings, and so many lost hours of sleep Amber and her 8 puppies are on their way to a full recovery. E-mails were sent out, feeding shifts were scheduled, and volunteers started offering much needed help to Amber. Clearly this was a team effort!

There are not words to say thank you enough to Amber's primary caretaker, temporary foster mom, and Amber's angel Pam S!!! Without the other members of Amber's team we may very well have lost the rest of this litter...Debi B, Linda D, Beth T, Suzanne R, Sharon M, Randy P, Caitlin O, Kirstie D, Pam B, and Taylor C, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

These are the two smallest puppies. They were removed from the litter, soon after we lost the one puppy, to receive fluids and formula more often. I am ecstatic to report that they are now eating 4-5 ounces per feeding and have plump little tummies. They will go back with their siblings very soon!

I promise more posts will follow as Amber and her miracle 8 continue on their journey in ARFP!

All 16 puppies that the ARFP rescue team took in a few weeks ago are spoken for. Looks like the economy is not hurting adoptions! Thank goodness, because our phone lines are so busy, especially with people wanting to surrender their own pets. So sad.
Kittens are also popping up everywhere. This is Brinn & Sammie, two already in foster care.

Guilford Garden Center called and they have a litter of kittens next door that they want us to come to look at.

Back to the 16 puppies, Howie was delivered to Blowing Rock on Tuesday, and Cappy was delivered to Garner Wednesday. Both deliveries went well and, thank goodness, the rest will be delivered locally. We pray for local deliveries!

Carmen A. asked if we could speak to her LEADS group yesterday morning and that went great! Met a bunch of local business people from our community- all animal lovers - who isn't??? It was a very enjoyable morning.

Wanted to share Forest with you.

Forest is an 18 month old Maine Coon mix. He was found living in a parking lot. Forest brings a calmness to whatever room he is in. He is just this big guy that lumbers around.

Wednesday is always busy around the adoption center. We're open from 5-8pm for adoptions, donations, etc... Lately we have had steady traffic every Wednesday and I have a feeling tonite will be extra busy b/c of all those cute pups we have!

Monday was a particularly busy afternoon this week. Thanks to many of you we had lots of Purina Puppy Chow donated! YEAH!!!! Last week we also had books and purses donated so the adoption center was beginning to look like puppy chow - book city. Monday was clean up day so everything went to storage and the puppy chow went into our homemade POD:-) For those of you that don't know this...we have a 1974 Dodge Ram that no longer runs. This is our homemade POD. You make do with what you have!

Foster Homes NEEDED

This is the sister to the two Beagle mix pups in the last post. Both of these puppies are in a temporary foster home. They both already sleep through the night, as do their siblings.

And this is the brother. We took in four puppies from this litter.

This morning I have already received an e-mail about a mama Beagle and two of the cutest puppies you have ever seen. They are in a local high-kill shelter. We would love to run up to Rockingham County and get these animals today but there is no room at the inn. We desperately need more foster homes. Please put the word out! Events Galore Happening!

This event is this coming Saturday, April 18th. There will be dogs and hot dogs! Volunteers will be on hand to accept donations of pet food to help homeless animals!

This event is the next Saturday, April 25th. It is being put on by a Summerfield Girl Scout Troop to earn their Silver Award. ARFP will be there as well as several other rescue groups, plus food vendors, and vendors selling pet supplies. This will be ONE big adoption event!

Born on 1/11/09 these two cuties are two of sweet Gina's puppies. Sully is the little girl, all white with freckles. Hudson is black and red with a dab of white. Both are lively and playful. They live with Quinn, the black puppy posted earlier. The three of them act just like real siblings!

Some Littles

It's been a busy week. Lots of phone calls, lots of rescues, and few adoptions.

This is sweet 1.5 year old Gina. She was abandoned when her owners moved and left her behind with babies. Thank goodness for a compassionate neighbor that called us. Gina has the most beautiful brown eyes and the most pleasant disposition. She spent an afternoon with me at the adoption center and we had a little photo shoot. Whomever adopts Gina is going to get a gem! PS. Her puppies will debut soon! Too cute!

Mr. Pedro is a striking black and white Terrier mix with charm galore. He was born in 2007 and is under 15 lbs. He honestly likes everyone - never met a stranger - never will. Pedro was rescued from a high-kill shelter.

Quinn, Quinn, Quinn, named after the person that rescued him, Quinn was born around 1/12/09 and is just a social little tyke! He was the only pup found and needed some playmates. Quinn has become brother to two of Gina's pups so he is going to think he is a Terrier/Dachshund mix.

This beautiful redhead is Riley and she also came from a high-kill shelter. She is spayed and ready for a new home. Riley loves people and will be popular when company comes over. She is definitely our social butterfly!

Last but not least is Angus. Now this boy can play. He is happy as a clam when he is playing with his buddies. Angus was found wandering the streets. He didn't seem to know where he was or where to go. He had obviously been dumped out. He was not neutered so we're sure he had never been to the doctor. Now he is neutered and looking for that special home! Angus is one year of age.

Yesterday ARFP was invited to participate, along with about 40 other nonprofits, in a volunteer fair. The event was to encourage staff and students to get involved in their community. I met a lot of nice people but the best part was networking with other organizations, sharing ideas, etc...
